About Us

Mission

The Foundation for Appraisal Education is a not-for-profit organization formed to promote the advancement of education related to personal property appraising. This includes providing instruction and training opportunities for individuals either seeking to improve their professional appraisal skills or to those seeking to enter the profession as a novice or student. We also seek to provide programs and venues to the public at large and to those specifically who seek and use appraisal services including lectures, forums, articles, and related events.

History

The Foundation for Appraisal Education began in 2002 as The ISA Education Foundation. The five member board included Gloria Moroni, Rick Cassagrande, Anne Blumer, CD Gallimore, and Nancy Bangiola. The immediate purpose was to raise funds for scholarships to those seeking to improve their status in the field of personal property appraising.

This was done largely through an auction held every year at the International Society of Appraiser's convention. This was begun a suggestion from Ruth Isgro, an appraiser now retired in Maine.

Through the few years of our existence the aims of the foundation have widened to include providing educational opportunities for all appraisers, establishing scholarships to those wishing to enter the field of appraising, and accepting memorials and gifts to serve those ends.

The first scholarships were given in 2004 for the following year. The 2008 season is the fifth year of our awards. Our board members have included Fred Winer, David Mapes, and Phil Sullivan. Our executive director, Rebecca Norton was hired in 2007.

Our non-profit status was granted in 2003 and our corporation was established under Illinois law. In 2007 headquarters were moved to San Antonio, Texas, where we have established legal residence and recognition. In the summer of 2008 our name was changed to the Foundation for Appraisal Education.*

Our board now consists of nine members and many volunteers. The Journal of Advanced Appraisal Studies was launched in 2008 and is planned for an annual release in the early spring of each succeeding year.

The board meets on a monthly basis to discuss plans and initiate programs, including the awarding and seeking of grants, the development of our scholarship program, and the investigation into public programs that will benefit the appraisal industry and educate the public about our profession.

* The Foundation for Appraisal Education is a separate corporate entity from its parent organization, the International Society of Appraisers.
